Make it Rustic with Olive Leaf Chalk Paint

At Muscle Creek Creative, we believe that every piece of furniture and decor can tell a story. Today, I'm excited to share the transformation of an old metal clock using our Chalked Up furniture paint in Olive Leaf. This clock, while not the fanciest or most expensive items in the world, holds a special place in my heart as it was one of the first pieces I bought when my partner (now husband) when we purchased our first home. Back then, I was more into bright colours, but now that we live in a 1930s/40s Federation-style home, my tastes have shifted to a more subtle, rustic, and warm aesthetic. Here's how I gave this clock a new life to better suit our current home.

Tools We Used:

Preparing the Clock

The clock was in really good condition, so the preparation was minimal:

  1. Clean: I started by giving the clock a bit of a dust and clean. I also scraped off some tape residue at the bottom. Chalk paint adheres well to metal, so no primer was needed.

The Painting Process

Here’s the step-by-step process for painting the clock:

  1. First and Second Coats: I applied the first and second coats of Olive Leaf chalk paint. Using nice, even strokes, I made sure the coverage was smooth. After each coat, I let the paint dry completely.
  2. Third Coat: Given the metal and the bright original colour of the clock, I did a few touch-ups where the previous paint was still visible. Each coat was followed by adequate drying time, which was only around 20 minutes on a warm day.

    Finishing Touches

After the final coat, I allowed the clock to dry thoroughly. For this project, I only used about 1/4 of a 120ml jar of Chalked Up Furniture Paint.

To protect the paint and give the clock a beautiful finish:

    1. Wax: I applied a protective wax top coat by rubbing the mini wax bar all over the clock.
    2. Buff: Using a lint-free wax cloth, I buffed the wax to a smooth, rustic finish.

And there you have it! Our old metal clock now has a warm, rustic look that fits perfectly with our Federation-style home. Chalk paint gives an amazing finish with minimal prep required, and it’s perfect for projects like this where you want to maintain a subtle, timeless look.
