The Story Behind the Stand

This plant stand was given to me by my mother-in-law many years ago, it became part of the decor in an old office job of mine. When the office recently closed, they asked if I wanted it back. Of course, I said yes! Alyssa and I decided to paint this one together to save time and enjoy some creative bonding.

Preparing the Stand

As this piece was older and had been used more than the Kmart stool we painted last time, we gave it a thorough check-over to see what prep work was needed. Here's how we did it:

Clean: We started with a quick clean using a wet cloth to remove dust and cobwebs.
Sand and Scrape: Although our Chalked Up paint doesn’t require sanding on a good surface, we still sanded any raised bits and scraped off any tape or residue.

The Painting Process

Now to the fun part—painting!

First and second coats: We applied the first and second coat of Doily White. Using nice, even strokes, in the same direction as the grain, we made sure the coverage was smooth. Then we let it dry completely.

Third Coats: Given the dark original colour of the stand, it needed three coats for the perfect finish plus a few touch ups on large surface ares where the grain was more visible. Each coat was followed by adequate drying time - only around 20 mins on a warm day.

Dry: After the final coat, we let the stand dry thoroughly. For this project, we used about 3/4 of a 500ml tin of Chalked Up Furniture Paint.

Finishing Touches

After allowing the paint to cure overnight, we applied a protective wax top coat:

Wax: We rubbed the wax bar all over the stand.

Buff: Using a lint-free wax cloth, we buffed the wax to a beautiful finish.

And just like that, our ugly plant stand was transformed! Chalk paint gives an amazing finish with minimal prep required. Be sure to let it cure for 24 hours if the piece you're painting will have high-traffic areas (e.g. chairs).

We hope this inspires you to embark on your own creative projects. Stay tuned for more tutorials and tips from Muscle Creek Creative, and don't forget to share your transformations with us!
